The Science Behind Winning Pitch Decks

Most CEOs treat a pitch deck as pure art: tell your story, and hope. But there's a proven structure to the decks that get funded. After DocSend analyzed thousands of fundraising decks, clear patterns emerged in slide order, content, and where investors actually spend their attention. Pair that structure with your story, and you get a deck that works.

What the Data Shows

DocSend's research found that investors spend an average of about 3.5 minutes on an entire deck, and the most successful decks run roughly 12 sections across about 19 slides, in an order that tells one cohesive story:

  1. Company purpose (one slide, a memorable hook)
  2. Problem (1-2 slides, in relatable language)
  3. Solution (one slide, your unique approach)
  4. Why now? (one slide, market conditions that create urgency)
  5. Market size (1-3 slides, TAM/SAM/SOM)
  6. Product (3-5 slides, screenshots/wireframes)
  7. Team (1-2 slides, bios, logos, LinkedIn)
  8. Business model (2-3 slides, investors spend the most time here)
  9. Traction (1-4 slides, sized to your stage, showing momentum and social proof)
  10. Competition (one slide, your differentiation)
  11. Financials (1-2 slides, strategic spending)
  12. The ask (one slide, amount and how you'll deploy it)

What Separates Winners From Losers

DocSend's analysis also found that the business-model slide gets the longest scrutiny (around 64 seconds on average); investors are spending markedly more time on competition than they used to; the traction section of un-funded companies draws far more skeptical review; and the best decks keep slides under about 50 words. Your headline is prime storytelling real estate.

Science Plus Art

The data gives you the structure; your job is the narrative. Weave your specific journey through these proven sections so investors want to be part of the story. If you've already clarified your story with our Pitch Deck Prep Questionnaire, this is how you structure those answers.
