How to Get Reverse Testimonials and Convert New Customers

Testimonials are one of the most underrated tools for growth, but not just any testimonials. The kind that convert are reverse testimonials: ones that start with the customer's doubt and then resolve it. They're the most effective way to use social proof, one of Robert Cialdini's six principles of persuasion. Here's how to capture and use them.

Why Testimonials Do the Selling

Testimonials are trust builders, objection busters, and conversion drivers, mini case studies that show a prospect the transformation you deliver, in your customer's words rather than your marketing's. We all rely on them: we check reviews before a hotel, a restaurant, even a $20 purchase, because we don't want to feel foolish for buying. As Sean D'Souza explains in The Brain Audit, every testimonial can tackle a specific objection. If objections are walls in the buyer's journey, reverse testimonials are the ladders over them.

Start with the Objection

Most businesses face the same handful of objections, whether you sell a $4 coffee or a $40,000 car:

  • Status quo ("we're fine as is") → raise desire for the transformation.
  • Price ("too expensive") → articulate value against the cost of the pain.
  • No differentiation ("you're all the same") → highlight your uniqueness.
  • Trust ("we've been burned before") → credibility, case studies, and risk reversal.
  • Timing ("not a priority now") → show the cost of inaction.

A reverse testimonial opens with that doubt, the way we naturally recommend things to a friend ("I wasn't sure about spending that much, but…"), then resolves it.

The 6 Questions That Capture a Reverse Testimonial

  1. What was the obstacle that almost prevented you from buying?
  2. What did you find as a result of buying?
  3. What specific feature did you like most?
  4. What are three other benefits?
  5. Would you recommend it, and why?
  6. Is there anything you'd like to add?

Ask them in order; the first question surfaces the objection, the rest resolve it with rich, believable detail.

How to Collect Them Well

  • Catch customers at their happiest, right after a win. (Tip: around 45 days post-purchase, email each new customer for a 15-minute check-in, automated with a scheduling link.)
  • Don't ask them to write. A blank form gets short, late responses. Instead, hop on a recorded Zoom, ask the six questions, and let the transcript give you rich language you can edit into a tight testimonial.
  • Capture the customer's words; they're more persuasive than your marketing jargon, so update your messaging to match how real customers describe you.

Make Them Real and Use Them Everywhere

A named, photographed testimonial beats an anonymous "B2B SaaS CEO" quote every time.

For example:

"Malloy Industries helped us distill our complicated and uncertain selling process into a simple and thoughtful framework. Malloy treated us like family, never shying away from difficult topics and speaking the kind truth to simplify how we think about our challenges. When we were trying to organize multiple disparate processes in our business, Malloy Industries took the time to understand our business fundamentals fully and streamline our processes to all link together, ultimately driving a better sales strategy." – Daniel Turner, TRAXyL

Add a five-star rating so it reads as positive at a glance, then put testimonials front and center: on your homepage and landing pages, in email, in social posts, and in sales decks. Build a "testimonial wall," and mix formats (written, video, screenshots) since people consume content differently.

Put a System Around It

Reverse testimonials move revenue, but only if you capture them consistently. If you don't have time to build the system, we can introduce you to our remote video-testimonial expert.
