Ever notice how once one investor commits, others suddenly want in? That's momentum, and great companies manufacture it.
Investors are human: they hate going first and they fear missing out. Whether you're raising a $250k pre-seed or a Series A, here are four ways to turn passive interest into active commitments.
1. Send Short 1:1 Progress Emails Between Meetings
Between investor meetings, send brief, specific updates that mention real progress: "We just met with [Investor A], who was impressed with [metric]. When they heard we're in diligence with [Investor B], they asked for data-room access. I'm pitching [Investor C] next week, and [Investor D] is soft-circled for $250k."
Send these every one to three weeks to everyone in your investor CRM while you're actively raising.
No investor CRM? Make a copy of our Investor CRM Template to track who to update and to score each investor's expected value.
2. Demonstrate a Coachable Spirit
Investors fund companies they believe will figure it out, and that means coachable. When you get feedback, don't get defensive. Smile, nod, and say, "That's a great point, I appreciate you bringing it up. If you were me, what would you do?" It builds rapport and buys your brain a few seconds to respond well.
3. the Ricochet Intro
A lesson from the CEO of EverFi (who has Jeff Bezos, Bono, and Ted Leonsis on his cap table): busy investors can't make intros all day, so ask for names instead. "Would it make your life easier if I reached out directly and used your name?" Most are glad to save the time, and you skip the four-to-six-week wait for a forwarded email.
Then open your outreach with it: "[Name], Jeff Bezos suggested I reach out about his newest investment…"
4. Follow Up to Close the Loop
When an investor introduces you to anyone, thank them promptly, then circle back after the meeting to report how it went and the next steps. Investors give you their Time, Talent, and Treasure, in that order: you earn Time in a meeting, Talent through warm intros, and how you handle those two determines how much Treasure they invest.
Momentum isn't only about the yeses. It's about keeping every investor on the sidelines seeing your progress, week after week, until going first stops feeling risky.
